Statistical modeling processes through the lens of instrumental genesis

Abstract Digital technology is indispensable for doing and learning statistics. When used in mathematics education, the of concepts development techniques using a digital tool are known to intertwine. So far, this intertwinement conceptual understanding, as instrumental genesis, has received little attention research on technology-supported statistics education. This study focuses genesis statistical modeling, investigating students’ modeling processes environment called TinkerPlots. In particular, we analyzed how emerging understanding intertwined instrumentation schemes that 28 students (aged 14–15) develop. We identified six common observed two-directional intertwining understanding. Techniques TinkerPlots helped reveal context-independent patterns fostered shift from model . Vice versa, led exploration more sophisticated techniques. recommend researchers, educators, designers, teachers involved education attentively consider relationship.
